ECHA and five European countries issue progress update on PFAS restriction
— Bad Tölz, 20 November 2024
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has updated its efforts to regulate per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a group of persistent and harmful chemicals widely used in various industries. Following a restriction proposal submitted in January 2023 by Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden, ECHA’s Risk Assessment (RAC) and Socio-Economic Analysis (SEAC) committees are evaluating over 10,000 PFAS chemicals using a sector-based approach. Insights from a six-month consultation, which generated 5,600 submissions, are shaping the assessment of risks, alternatives, and socio-economic impacts.
Two primary restriction options are under review: a full ban or a ban with time-limited exemptions for uses lacking alternatives. Additional restriction approaches are being explored for critical sectors like industrial applications and medical devices. For the first time, sealing applications are formally included in the PFAS restriction discussions. Final RAC and SEAC opinions are expected in 2025, with a public consultation to gather further socio-economic feedback. ECHA remains committed to delivering transparent, high-quality recommendations to guide the European Commission’s decision-making with Member States.
